Skydragon's Roar

Skyfire over Ceres: A Perry Rhodan Action Story

March 1977, Ceres Station

Lieutenant Tamara "Tam" Hansen adjusted the straps of her G-suit, the familiar tightness a comforting routine. Outside the viewport, the dwarf planet Ceres loomed, a vast expanse of cratered rock and ice glistening under the harsh glare of the distant sun. Tam wasn't here to admire the scenery. Today, she was piloting her trusty GCC Skydraggon, one of the last of its kind still in active service.

Ceres Station, a small but bustling outpost nestled within a cavern beneath the surface, was under attack. An unidentified vessel had emerged from the asteroid belt, a sleek, needle-shaped craft unlike anything Tam had seen before. It unleashed a barrage of energy blasts, crippling the station's defenses.

"This is Hansen to Control," Tam spoke into her helmet comm, her voice tight with urgency. "We've got hostiles! Unknown origin, heavily armed."

Static crackled back. "Copy that, Hansen. Scramble all remaining fighters. ETA on reinforcements from Mars is ten minutes."

Ten minutes. Ceres Station wouldn't last that long. Tam gritted her teeth. The Skydraggon, though aging, was still a formidable machine. Its Arkonian-derived impulse engine roared to life, and with a surge of acceleration, Tam rocketed out of the hangar bay.

The alien vessel hovered menacingly above the station, its hull shimmering with an otherworldly glow. Two smaller fighters detached from its undercarriage, darting towards Tam like ravenous insects. She expertly maneuvered the Skydraggon, dodging their laser fire. Her desintegrator cannons roared, spitting bolts of energy. One of the alien fighters crumpled, dissolving into a cloud of vapor.

The larger vessel unleashed another volley of energy blasts. One clipped Tam's wing, sending her Skydraggon spinning wildly. Alarms blared in the cockpit, warning of failing systems. Tam fought to regain control, sweat stinging her eyes. She couldn't afford to lose it now.

Suddenly, a booming voice crackled through the comm. "This is Captain Matsuo of the freighter 'Yamato'. We're here to help!"

A battered freighter emerged from behind the bulk of Ceres Station, its hull scarred but its guns blazing. It took the brunt of the alien vessel's attack, buying Tam precious seconds.

"Thanks, Matsuo!" Tam yelled, her voice raw with emotion. "I owe you one."

Focusing on the remaining alien fighter, she dove in, weaving through a hail of laser fire. With a final burst of energy from her desintegrator cannons, she sent the fighter spiraling into the depths of space.

The larger alien vessel, realizing the tide had turned, let loose a final, ear-splitting shriek before warping away, disappearing into the unforgiving void.

Silence descended, broken only by the ragged gasps of Tam's own breathing. Smoke wisped from the damaged Skydraggon, a testament to the fierce battle. Down below, the battered Ceres Station slowly came back to life.

Matsuo's voice came back on the comm, laced with relief. "Good work out there, Hansen. You saved our bacon."

Tam chuckled, a shaky sound. "Just another day at the office, Captain."

As Martian reinforcements arrived, Tam knew the Skydraggon's days were numbered. Newer, more advanced fighters were already in development. But for now, the trusty old workhorse had proven its worth once again. As she limped her damaged craft back to the station, a sense of pride filled her. The Skydraggon might be obsolete, but in the hands of a skilled pilot, it could still turn the tide of a battle. And that, Tam thought, was something to be celebrated.

GCC SAAB Skydragon — The First Terran Space Superiority Fighter

Origins and Development (1971–1973)

Following Major Perry Rhodan’s historic Mun landing in June 1971 and the discovery of the Arkonide cruiser AETRON, humankind took its first steps toward becoming a spacefaring civilization. To ensure political independence and financial stability, Homer G. Adams founded the General Cosmic Company (GCC), tasked with adapting and commercializing Arkonide technology for use on Earth.

Although Arkonide gravity-field propulsion and energy weapons were far superior to terrestrial designs, full implementation was technically and economically impractical in the early 1970s. Thus, the GCC pursued a hybrid approach, combining simplified Arkonide systems with proven terrestrial aerospace engineering.

Discovery of the Venusian Arkonide Base

During the first Terran expedition to Venus in 1972, led by Rhodan and Reginald Bull, an abandoned Arkonide outpost dating back 10,000 years was found beneath the Venusian cloud cover. Stored in its vaults were several single-seat Arkonide interceptor craft, heavily damaged but technologically invaluable.

While full replication was impossible, the concept inspired the idea of a Terran-built planetary and orbital interceptor—cheap, mass-producible, and capable of defending Earth and planets or asteroids.

Industrial Partnership with Sweden

Seeking a neutral and technologically advanced partner, the GCC entered a covert development agreement with Saab in Sweden. Based loosely on the airframe of the Saab 35 Draken, the new spacecraft fused:

  • Terran aerodynamics

  • Arkonide impulse sublight engines

  • Twin light disintegrator cannons

  • Independent life-support systems for up to 48 hours in space

Official designation: GCC-SAAB SD-1 “Skydragon”

Operational History

First Deployment:
By autumn 1973, the first Skydragons were stationed at Terrania Spaceport and the Venus Base Gar hive, performing atmospheric interceptions, orbital patrols, and convoy overwatch.

The Vega Campaign (1975):
Two Skydragons—SD-07 “Fenrir” and SD-12 “Njord”—were assigned to the GOOD HOPE during Perry Rhodan’s first interstellar mission to the Vega System in May 1975.

They participated in:

  • Atmospheric recon over Ferrol

  • Interdiction raids against Topside troop landers

  • Close escort during the evacuation of indigenous Ferronians

Both Skydragons were destroyed in combat during the Battle of Golghoor Plains, marking the first loss of Terran-built space superiority fighters in interstellar warfare.

Later Service:
Although technologically outdated by the late 1970s due to the introduction of pure anti-grav Arkonide-Terran fusion craft (e.g. the Crest II interceptor series), the Skydragon remained in limited service until 1982, mainly:

  • Patrol duty in the inner Solar System

  • Training missions at Terrania Flight Academy

  • Service on smaller bases like Ceres.

Decommissioning and Legacy

By 2017, all Skydragons had been retired. Most were scrapped, but nine surviving units remain in museums and GCC collections—one fully restored unit is on static display in Terrania Space Museum Hall IV, still bearing the faded insignia of GOOD HOPE’s Space Wing.

Though primitive compared to later Terran or Arkonide designs, the GCC Skydragon represents the first indigenous human attempt to build a true space-combat vehicle—a symbolic bridge between atmospheric flight and interstellar warfare.

Airfix Saab Draaken

The Model:

The Skydraggon was made based on a 1/72 scale Airfix Saab Draken kit. The outer wings were modified, the fin removed and the landing gear war rebuild without wheels.
The desintegrator guns were made from special Tamia Q-tips  ;D
Everything is painted with Revell Aqua Colour, the decals are taken form the spare parts box.
