Lieutenant Khila adjusted the unfamiliar tightness of her pilot suit, the fabric a strange sensation against her warm fur. Gazing out the viewport of her Häb-Chte fighter, she watched the swirling nebula around Icin, her home planet, shrink into the distance. 1426 light-years away, Earth, the world that had opened the galaxy to the Rebans, was just a memory.
Khila, barely 1.4 meters tall, was one of the first Reban pilots to train alongside Terrans. Their bulky fighters, while formidable, lacked the elegance of the Häb-Chte, a marvel that moved with the grace of a mountain cat. Its sleek form housed an engine that could dance around larger ships and an impulse cannon that packed a punch far exceeding its size.
"Firebird Flight, this is Terran Captain Rodriguez," a gruff voice crackled through the comm unit. "Sensor readings indicate a Jülziish patrol ahead. They're likely scouting for weaknesses in the Räb system's outer defenses."
Khila gritted her teeth. The Jülziish, a race of barbaric scavengers, had plagued the system ever since the Rebans' first encounter with them five years prior. The loss of the 'Star Runner,' a Terran-made vessel they'd been piloting, was a constant reminder of their vulnerability.
"Acknowledged, Captain," Khila replied, her voice steady despite the knot of apprehension in her stomach. "We'll flank them from the left."
The Terran fighters, two hulking Leviathans, surged forward. Khila and her two fellow Reban pilots followed close behind, their Häb-Chte fighters weaving through the asteroid field like fireflies.
Suddenly, a guttural roar filled the comm. "They've spotted us! Prepare for engagement!"
Three Jülziish warships emerged from behind a particularly large asteroid, their hulls a sickly yellow, bristling with archaic weaponry. The lead ship, the 'Iron Maw,' was a monstrosity, its central cannon a gaping maw promising destruction.
The Leviathans opened fire, their laser beams carving smoking gouges across the Jülziish hulls. But the Jülziish returned fire with a ferocity that sent tremors through Khila's Häb-Chte. One Leviathan sputtered, smoke billowing from a critical hit.
"They're taking down the Leviathans!" Khila cried. Her Häb-Chte lurched as she pushed the engines to their limit. They needed to take out the 'Iron Maw' before it could finish off the remaining Terran fighter.
Dodging a hail of blaster fire, Khila positioned herself directly behind the 'Iron Maw.' Jülziish shields were notoriously weak against rapid energy bursts. Focusing all her concentration, she unleashed the Häb-Chte's impulse cannon in a rapid staccato, hammering at the 'Iron Maw's' rear shields.
The yellow barrier flickered, wavered, then with a satisfying pop, gave way. Khila lined up a perfect shot and unleashed the full power of her cannon.
A blinding white light erupted, engulfing the 'Iron Maw' in its fury. The monstrous ship shuddered violently, then broke apart in a fiery explosion. The remaining Jülziish ships, their morale shattered, scattered in disarray.
Captain Rodriguez's voice, laced with relief, crackled through the comm. "Firebird Flight, you did it! You took down the 'Iron Maw'!"
Khila let out a relieved huff, the tension draining from her body. "We did it together, Captain."
As the Häb-Chte limped back towards Icin, its hull marked but not broken, Khila knew this was far from over. The Jülziish threat remained, a constant reminder that peace, even for a species just taking its first steps into the galaxy, was a fragile thing. But Khila, and the growing Rebanian defense force, were ready to fight for their home. They may have been peaceful by nature, but they had learned a harsh lesson: sometimes, the only way to defend your way of life was to embrace the fire of war.
After the contact with the Terrans in 2127, the Rebans were confronted for the first time with a new phenomenon: Not all galactic races were friendly to them.
There were no significant conflicts among themselves in their development, and so it was a great shock for the Rebans when they lost one of their first faster-than-light ships - taken over from Terran stocks - in 2143 in an attack by Jülziish pirates.
As a result of this event, the Rebans decided to introduce defence forces. One of the first products was the one-Reban fighter "Häb-Chte" - which means firebird - developed with Terran help.
The sublight space fighter was armed with an impulse cannon and was initially deployed within the Räb system. Later it was also used on board of larger Reban ships.
For training purposes rebanian Häb-Chte fighters flew on terranian spaceships, too, and were provided with markings understandable for terrans. The pictures show such a fighter and its pilot. Unusual for Rebans, the fighter pilots wear a pilot suit, normally Rebans rarely wear no clothing.
The model is in scale 1/72 and was printed with a FDM printer. The 3D model consists of parts of a F-104 Starfighter (fuselage parts) and a F1 Mirage (wings, tail unit), the whole was then assembled with own components to the fighter.
The 3D model of the small ground glider was created by Heinz Schöck (of the Facebook group "Perry Rhodan Visuell") and printed with an SLA printer.
The Rebaners were "scanned" by photogrammetry and printed with the SLA printer.
