The crimson sun, already distorted by the swirling Martian dust storm, seemed to dim completely as a colossal shadow fell upon the Schildkröte. Perry Rhodan, his weathered face etched with a new line of worry, adjusted the magnification on his viewport.
"Administrator," Tanya Ling's voice crackled over the intercom, a note of awe replacing its usual controlled tension, "Is that… a ship?"
The shadow resolved into a massive, cigar-shaped vessel, hovering silently above the Martian landscape. Its sleek, metallic hull gleamed an unnatural green, unlike anything Rhodan had encountered before. The intercepted Arkonide transmissions hadn't mentioned anything about this.
"Unknown origin," confirmed Mondra, the young Terran engineer, her voice tight with excitement and a hint of fear. "No signature on our scanners."
Rhodan's gut twisted. This wasn't part of the plan. Their mission was to locate and infiltrate the hidden Arkonide base, not encounter a mysterious alien vessel. But they couldn't ignore it.
"Atlan," he directed, his voice firm, "prepare for a potential encounter. Weapons hot, shields at full."
Atlan grunted in response, his massive fingers moving with practiced ease across the weapons console. Inside the cramped cabin, a tense silence settled, broken only by the low hum of the Schildkröte's fusion reactor.
As they neared the hovering vessel, a hatch on its underside hissed open, revealing a dark, cavernous interior. A platform extended towards them, beckoning. Rhodan exchanged a glance with Tanya and Mondra. None of them liked the idea, but they couldn't simply turn around.
"Prepare for docking," Rhodan commanded, his voice betraying none of the apprehension he felt.
The docking procedure was unnervingly smooth. The platform seamlessly interfaced with the Schildkröte's docking clamps, creating an airtight seal. With a deep breath, Rhodan released the restraints and led his team out of the vehicle, the weight of countless past explorations heavy on his shoulders.
Stepping onto the platform, they were met with an unnatural silence. The interior of the vessel was bathed in a soft, green glow, emanating from strange luminescent panels embedded in the walls. The air was breathable, but held a metallic tang that stung their nostrils.
A low, disembodied voice echoed through the vast chamber. "Welcome, travelers from Earth. We have been expecting you."
Rhodan gripped the energy pistol at his hip. This was a trap, he was sure of it. But before he could respond, a section of the wall shimmered and dissolved, revealing a figure unlike anything they had ever seen. Tall and slender, its skin was a pale, translucent green. Its head was elongated, crowned with feathery tendrils that pulsed with an inner light.
"We are the Xylan," the voice continued, emanating from the figure itself, "and we have a message for the Administrator of Earth."
Rhodan stepped forward, his voice firm. "I am Perry Rhodan. What message do you have?"
The Xylan's head tilted to one side, its tendrils flickering. "We have observed your progress, Administrator. Your courage and ingenuity are impressive. But a great darkness approaches, a threat that even you may not be able to overcome."
Intrigue warred with suspicion in Rhodan's mind. "What darkness? Who are you referring to?"
The Xylan remained silent for a moment, its luminous eyes seeming to pierce into Rhodan's very soul. Then, it spoke again, its voice filled with urgency. "Seek out the lost city of Xylar, buried beneath the sands of Mars. There you will find the key to defeating the coming darkness. But beware, for the Arkonides are not your only enemy."
With that, the Xylan turned away, its form shimmering as it phased back into the wall. The platform lurched, detaching from the Schildkröte as the hatch slammed shut. They were back outside, the gargantuan green vessel pulling away, disappearing back into the swirling Martian dust storm.
Rhodan stood there, the weight of the Xylan's words pressing down on him. A lost city, a coming darkness, and a new enemy to contend with. Their mission had just taken a drastic turn. But as he looked at Tanya and Mondra, their faces etched with a mixture of fear and determination, he knew there was only one path forward.
The Arkonide base could wait. They had a new mystery to unravel, and the fate of the galaxy might just depend on it.
The Schildkröte is a ground based expedition vehicle to be used on planets with extreme gravity and/or weather conditions. Powered by a fusion reactor, the raft is able to transport a crew of 5 persons and is equipped with a small cargo platform in the back.
More info about this craft can be found in the Perrypedia (German).
The model shows two Schildkröten in a hangar of the secret base on the planet Last Hope.
This is a 3D printed model in 1/250 scale. I made the 3D model by remixing an existing Battle tech tank of the same name in Tinkercad.
