Captain Reginald "Reg" Marconi pounded his fist on the armrest, frustration warring with the festive spirit of Terran Christmas. December 2405, and here he was, yanked from holiday leave for a distress beacon from a freighter – the "Oldenburg." The flickering signal hinted at trouble, and Reg knew all too well what kind. Rumors of resurgent "Meister der Insel" activity had been swirling for weeks.
"Lieutenant Singh, ETA on that beacon?" Reg barked into the comm channel.
"Two minutes, Captain," came Lieutenant Tamara "Tam" Singh's steady reply. Her green eyes held a glint of concern that mirrored Reg's own. The Oldenburg shouldn't have been out this far on the fringes, not with Meister activity suspected.
The Mosquito-Jet thrummed beneath them, a Terkonit steel cocoon hurtling through the cosmos. At 26 meters long, it was a beast compared to older fighters, boasting an FTL drive capable of traversing 100,000 light-years – a marvel of human technology. Emerging from the hyperspace fold, Reg's breath hitched. The Oldenburg, a once-proud freighter, was now a mangled carcass, drifting amidst the wreckage of three sleek, needle-nosed Sternenjäger fighters – the signature craft of the Meister.
"Tam, target those Sternenjäger. We gotta disable them before they take off with any survivors," Reg ordered, his voice laced with grim determination.
"Targeting, Captain." Tam's fingers danced across the console. The Mosquito lurched as the Transform Gun whirred to life. This wasn't your average laser cannon. It materialized deadly 20-gigaton nuclear bombs directly at the target. With a heart-stopping lurch, a bomb materialized next to each Sternenjäger, engulfing them in an eruption of violet fire.
But before they could breathe a sigh of relief, the comm crackled with a new voice, laced with cold malice. "Terran scum! You've interfered for the last time!"
Two more Sternenjäger materialized from the wreckage, their hulls scorched but hunger for battle burning bright. Reg cursed. These new Sternenjäger seemed faster, more agile than their predecessors. He threw the Mosquito into a series of heart-pounding maneuvers, the g-forces threatening to turn his vision red.
"They're flanking us, Captain!" Tam yelled, her voice strained.
Reg gritted his teeth. The Mosquito was a powerhouse, but not built for dogfights. He glanced at the weapons panel. Only one bomb remained in the Transform Gun. This was a do-or-die situation.
"Tam, I need you to distract them. Just for a moment."
"What are you planning, Captain?"
"No time to explain. Just do it!"
With a silent prayer, Reg powered the Transform Gun to maximum. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he aimed, not for the Sternenjäger themselves, but for the empty space between them. The bomb materialized in a blinding flash, the resulting energy surge sending shockwaves through both Sternenjäger. One sputtered and died, while the other, momentarily stunned, drifted out of range.
Reg seized the opportunity. "Fire all forward guns! Now!"
The Mosquito's nose erupted in a barrage of emerald beams, shredding the remaining Sternenjäger's hull. It spun away, a smoking carcass.
Silence descended, broken only by the ragged breaths of Reg and Tam. Reg slumped back in his chair, drained but exhilarated. The comm crackled again, this time with a friendly voice.
"Major Aiko on the Power Station. Looks like Santa brought a special kind of cheer this year, Captain. We're sending a repair crew to your Mosquito."
Relief washed over Reg. He and Tam had secured a small victory against overwhelming odds, a testament to the courage and ingenuity of the Terran Space Fleet. As they limped back to the Power Station, the festive lights twinkling in the distance, Reg couldn't help but think – maybe next year, he'd actually get to spend Christmas with his family. But for now, duty called, and the Mosquito, battered but not broken, was ready to answer.
The Mosquito-Jet was a huge milestone in the development of Terranian space fighters as it was the first vehicle of its kind with a FTL drive. Equipped with a Transform-Gun carrying three 20GT nuclear bombs and a so called "HÜ" force field, it was a huge improvement compared with older space fighters.
With a length of 26 meters and a crew of two, the Mosquito was significant bigger than previous fighters. The FTL drive had a range of approximate 100.000 light years and the jet was able to accelerate wiht 700km/s^2.
Soon the Mosquito-Jet got the backbone of Terranian space fighters and it was found on almost every base or in major space craft.
The model shows a Mosquito-Jet and some older single seat fighters in a hangar on the planet Opposite in December 2405.
More info about this craft can be found in the Perrypedia (German) and in the cut-away drawing.
