Year 2219. Galactic Standard Time. Captain Helena Markova, a woman whose steely gaze mirrored the icy depths of space, gripped the command console of the Iceland. The Iceland was a sleek, 100-meter Staaten-class light cruiser – a predator in Terran steel. Built for speed and cunning, it was a scalpel amidst the battle fleet's hammers. This nimble scout, armed with oversized engines and sophisticated tracking systems, carved its path through the unknown, gathering intel and disappearing before anyone knew it was there.
Their current hunt led them to the uncharted Korolev System, a swirling nebula named after the legendary Terran cosmonaut. Their quarry: a faint, distorted distress beacon emanating from the system's farthest reaches. It pulsed with an unsettling urgency, a broken song unlike any standard Terran distress call.
"Captain," Lieutenant Sato's voice crackled over the comm, "long-range scanners are picking up something… unusual on the far side of the nebula."
Helena, ever the pragmatist, knew "unusual" could spell disaster on the fringes of human space. Her gaze darted towards the bustling launch bay. Three Terran fighters, the "Red Talons," were being readied for recon, their pilots buzzing with nervous anticipation. These nimble craft were the Icelander's only offensive punch, a meager force against the unknown.
"Sato," Helena ordered, her voice sharp as the ship's lasers, "prepare Red Talons for recon. Let's see what lurks in that cosmic soup."
The bridge crackled with nervous energy as Sato relayed the orders. Lieutenant Chen, the Red Talons' daring leader, reported for duty. The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with a vibroblade. Reports trickled back from the recon team, fragmented and laced with static, doing little to ease Helena's apprehension. They spoke of derelict vessels, some Terran, some of unknown origin, all drifting lifeless within the swirling gas. No sign of survivors, only a chilling silence.
Then, silence shattered. A frantic transmission from Lieutenant Chen tore through the comm. "Captain! Unknown vessel approaching! Massive… unlike anything we've ever seen!" The comm sputtered and died, leaving a void of horrifying possibility. Helena felt her blood turn to ice. An unknown vessel in uncharted space? This wasn't just a recon mission anymore. This was potential first contact, and the Icelander was woefully outmatched.
Her voice, calm amidst the rising panic, issued orders. Fighters to engage, destroyers to form a defensive perimeter. The Iceland might be a scout, but its crew were veterans of a hundred daring missions, honed to survive against all odds. With a determined glint in her eye, Helena slammed her fist on the console.
"Red Talons, engage! Disrupt their systems, buy us time! Full power to engines, Sato! We're jumping blind!"
The Iceland lurched as its powerful hyper-jump engine roared to life. Alarms blared, red lights pulsed, and the crew braced for the disorienting jump. This was a desperate gamble, a blind leap into the unknown to escape a potentially hostile encounter. Out there, in the swirling embrace of the nebula, an alien vessel waited. The fate of the missing ships, and perhaps the first contact with an unknown civilization, hinged on the Icelander's gamble. They were the eyes and ears of the Terran Empire, and today, they would stare into the abyss with unwavering courage, hoping to emerge on the other side.
In the Perry Rhodan series, the classic spaceship used by humans in this series is a globe with a torus around its equator to house the engines.
Those "Kugelraumer" were produced from "small" 60 meter ones - which also were used as tenders on bigger spaceships - up to the classic ultra-battleship with a diameter of 2500 meters.
The ship:
The light cruisers of the "Staaten" (Country) class were mainly used for reconnaissance operations.
Those ships were build in large numbers and served in all fleets of the Solar Empire. Many ships were demilitarised after their active duty and then used for various civilian or scientific usage as a second career.
With a diameter of 100meters they were only equipped with light armour and armament, but with engines compared to much bigger 500 meter battlecruisers.
They were able to accelerate to jump speed in just about 8 minutes, their FTL drive was a hyper jump engine. The ships had a crew of 150 members and had a few one-man space fighters and three-men destroyers on board, plus some additional "Shift" flying tanks.
The model shows the light cruiser "Iceland" landed on a foreign planet in July 2219.
The model is 3D-printed with an Anycobic Mega using PLA. Scale is 1/2000, (Diameter is 5 cm), the model is painted with Revell Aqua Colour. Decals were self made.
