The KC-11, a sleek, spherical vessel with a diameter of 60 meters and an engine torus at its equator, hummed with anticipation as it separated from the CREST II. As a Kaulquappe, it was designed for speed and maneuverability, making it ideal for reconnaissance missions like the one it was now embarking on.
As they ventured deeper into the desolate landscape of the Green Level of Horrors, the KC-11's sensors picked up an unusual energy signature. A colossal fortress, Tata, stood defiant amidst a barren wasteland. As they drew closer, they witnessed a brutal assault by the Eskies, a reptilian race known for their ferocity.
The KC-11's captain, Commander Don Redhorse, ordered his crew to maintain a safe distance. He knew that the Gurus, the enigmatic inhabitants of Tata, were capable of extraordinary feats. Their fortress, with its shimmering energy shields and pulsating towers, was a testament to their advanced technology.
Just as the Eskies seemed poised to breach the fortress, a blinding flash of light erupted from Tata. The KC-11 was thrown off course, its systems momentarily paralyzed. When the ship regained control, Don Redhorse found himself staring at a frozen landscape. The Gurus had unleashed a powerful parapsychic wave that had chilled the entire region to bone-chilling temperatures.
The KC-11's engines struggled to generate heat, and the ship began to lose altitude. Don Redhorse ordered the crew to prepare for an emergency landing. As they descended, the ship's hull creaked and groaned under the immense pressure. The icy ground was unforgiving, and the KC-11 skidded to a halt, its landing gear buried in the frozen soil.
Despite its small size, the Kaulquappe was remarkably resilient. The crew huddled together for warmth, their breath fogging the air inside the spherical cabin. Don Redhorse received a message from the CREST II. The flagship had also been affected by the Gurus' attack and was forced to make an emergency landing. Operation Eskimo was being initiated. Two shift vessels, armed with anesthetic weapons, would be sent to neutralize the Gurus and secure the area.
The KC-11 was on the brink of freezing solid when the shift vessels arrived. Their powerful energy shields provided temporary relief from the frigid temperatures. The Kaulquappe was loaded onto one of the shift vessels and transported to a safe distance from the Gurus' influence.
As the shift vessels opened fire on Tata, the KC-11's crew watched in awe. The anesthetic weapons were devastatingly effective. The Gurus, one by one, fell into a deep slumber.
With the threat neutralized, the KC-11 was returned to its landing site. The repair crews worked tirelessly to restore the ship to operational status. As the sun began to rise, casting long, icy shadows across the desolate landscape, the KC-11's engines roared to life.
Don Redhorse and his crew were ready for the next leg of their journey, a perilous flight through the Red Level of Horrors. The Gurus had proven to be a formidable enemy, but the KC-11, with its agility and resilience, was determined to overcome any obstacle that stood in their way.
In the Perry Rhodan series, the classic spaceship used by humans in this series is a globe with a torus around its equator to house the engines.
Those "Kugelraumer" were produced from "small" 60 meter ones - which also were used as tenders on bigger spaceships - up to the classic ultra-battleship with a diameter of 2500 meters.
The ship:
This a a typical Kaulquappe, a small 60 meter ship which is often used as a tender on larger fleet units. With its crew of minimum of 15 member, the ship is able to operate with a FTL drive and has a maximum acceleration of 600km/s^2.
This particular ship is the KC-11, a tender of the fleet flagship "Crest II", is shown in its state of October 2400 there it was operating in the hollow world "Horror".
This was my first attempt to complete design and print a spaceship with all its interior in it. In the Perry Rhodan series, a cut-away drawing of a spaceship is printed every four weeks. The first one was published in issue 192 in 1965 - and it was a Kaulquappe. So this is definitely a 1960s SciFi design and i tried to rebuild the cut-away drawing in 3D and print it.
Design was made with Tinkercad (which is not really suited for this task) and the pint was made with an Anycubic Mega FDM printer. The model was printed deck by deck and then glued together for easier painting.
Total print time was about 3 days - not counting the numerous test prints I made.
Scale of the model is 1:500 - 12 cm in diameter, but on a resin printer, it can be printed as small as 2cm without loosing any details.
The model was painted with Revell Aqua Color and a few parts of the spare part box were used. The crew consists of PE US carrier deck crew.
Unfortunately, I did not get the permission to release the .stl files for printing by the publishers of Perry Rhodan as I had planned originally.
