The Marder 1 is a German infantry fighting vehicle used by the German Army since the 1970s. It was designed as part of West Germany's rebuilding of its armored fighting vehicle industry and has proven to be a successful design. While it used to have unique features like a remote machine gun and gun ports, these have been removed or streamlined in later upgrades. Around 2,100 Marders were taken into service by the West German army, but the vehicle in its German variant was not sold to any foreign militaries. Chile and Greece have considered purchasing retired Marders, and Argentina uses a simplified and locally produced variant. The Marder 1 is currently being replaced by the Puma.
