With over 650 boats built, the Type VII was the most important submarine of the German Kriegsmarine. Built between 1936 and 1944, these boats operated mainly in the North Atlantic and were known for their "Rudeltaktik" - a simultaneous night attack by several surface U-boats on Allied convoys.

In addition to torpedo attacks, they could also be used to lay mines and were renowned for their manoeuvrability and fast diving speed. Shortly after the introduction of the first model, an improved version with better manoeuvrability (Type VIIB) was built. T

he most commonly built variant was the Type VIIC, of which the Type VIIC/41 variant was made of thicker steel to increase the diving depth. Other variants include the mine-laying Type VIID and the torpedo-carrying Type VIIF.

Today one of these boats, U995, is on display at Laboe, Germany.

This submarine model is something special, it was a birthday present from my former colleagues. They wanted a model of U743 (it had to be this particular boat, there is a long story behind it ....). Of course there is no kit of this boat available and I would have loved to see them trying to get this boat from a hobby shop :)

What I got was a Revell kit of U47, one with the boat interior in it, but as it is of the same type VIIC as U743, we just think that this boat is the one we want.

Building the boat gave some mixed feelings, when you look at the interiour of the model it is as correct as the inside of a toaster, a real German submarine looks very different inside. But no complaints, it was a surprise gift and of course I had to take it back to the office to show my colleagues.

The model was build OOB, adding a wooden stand and was painted with Revell Enamel.
