A piercing hum vibrated through the command deck of the ICELAND. Captain Esteban Chavez gripped the armrests, knuckles white. The viewscreen pulsed with a kaleidoscope of colors, distorted by the immense gravity well of Supot 4, a gas giant choked by swirling storms.
"ETA to test zone, Captain?" Lieutenant Tamara Volkov's voice cut through the tension, her blue eyes fixed on the instrument panel.
"Three rotations," Chavez rasped, his throat dry. "Engineering reports shields holding at 85%."
The ICELAND, a light cruiser of the Terran Solar Fleet, had been tasked with a peculiar mission. They were on Supot 4 to observe the test flight of a prototype vessel from a newly-contacted species - the Rebans of planet Icin, 1426 light-years from Earth.
Just fifteen years prior, Icin was a backwater planet populated by sentient, bipedal bears ranging from a meter to over a meter and a half tall. Their technological advancement was comparable to Earth's pre-spaceflight era. Then, a Terran exploration vessel stumbled upon them. The subsequent contact ignited a spark of fascination within the Reban society towards Earth and everything Terran.
This fascination bled into their technology. The Pac-Se class, their first faster-than-light starship, bore an uncanny resemblance to Terran designs. The gleaming, circular vessels looked like oversized flying saucers, a visual homage to the craft that had brought them interstellar knowledge.
"Incoming signal, Captain," Volkov announced. "Unidentified origin, but seems to match Reban communication protocols."
Chavez leaned closer. A distorted image flickered on the auxiliary screen – a Reban officer, its ursine features etched with concern.
"This is Captain R'lan of the Pac-Se One," the officer rasped, a static hiss accompanying his words. "We are experiencing… difficulties. Shields failing… hull breach imminent…"
The image flickered and died. A cold dread settled over the bridge. The test flight had gone horribly wrong.
"Deploy rescue shuttles, full emergency protocol!" Chavez barked.
Sirens wailed as the bay doors hissed open, spitting out two small, agile Terran shuttles.
"Get them to that Reban ship, Volkov. Now!"
Volkov acknowledged with a curt nod, her fingers flying across the control panel. The shuttles, piloted by the seasoned team of Lieutenant Sato and Ensign Ramirez, zipped through the swirling atmosphere of Supot 4, braving the treacherous winds.
Meanwhile, on the bridge of the ICELAND, Chavez watched with bated breath as the Pac-Se One limped across the viewscreen, its once pristine hull now marred by gaping black scars.
"They're losing altitude fast, Captain," Volkov reported. "Heavy atmospheric interference. Rescue shuttles can't get a clear lock."
Time seemed to stretch, each tick of the chronometer an eternity. Then, a flicker of hope. A burst of light from one of the shuttles, followed by a successful docking with the crippled Pac-Se One.
Relief washed over the bridge. But the mission wasn't over. They needed to get both craft out of the Supot 4's gravity well.
"Prepare tractor beam, Captain," Volkov said, her voice firm. "We'll pull them both in."
The powerful tractor beam of the ICELAND roared to life, a beacon of hope in the churning storm. Slowly, agonizingly slowly, the two smaller vessels were pulled towards the cruiser.
Finally, with a shudder, both crafts docked with the ICELAND. A cheer erupted on the bridge – a victory snatched from the jaws of disaster.
Later, after tending to the rescued Rebans and debriefing them on the malfunction that caused the near-catastrophe, a different kind of tension filled the air. The Reban engineers, their ursine faces etched with determination, huddled with Terran specialists, poring over technical diagrams.
The incident with the Pac-Se One had exposed a chink in the Reban's technological armor, a reminder that their reliance on Terran designs wasn't without its flaws. It was a new chapter in the Terran-Reban relationship, one that promised collaboration, not just admiration. And as the ICELAND, carrying the echoes of Earth in its design and a newfound alliance in its hold, warped away from Supot 4, Captain Chavez knew this was just the beginning.
The Rebans live on the planet Icin, 1426 light years away from earth. In 2127, Icin was discovered by an explorer ship from Earth. The Rebans, which resemble upright walking bears (the size of an adult Reban can vary from 20-160cm) were about to take their first steps into interstellar space. But through contact with Earth, the Rebans technical development took a steep upswing, so that only 15 years after first contact they were able to build their first spaceship that could travel faster than the speed of light.
Because of the Rebans fascination with everything about Earth, the first designs of Reban spaceships had unmistakable (visual) references to Terran designs.
The space yachts of the Pac-Se class quickly became an insider tip on the private yacht market and in the course of the DPMSP (Developing Planets Military Support Program) of the Solar Fleet these small spacecraft were evaluated.
The model shows a group of Pac-Se disks during tests on the planet Supot 4 in the Supot system.
This is the last version of the Pac-Se disks, this time in 1:2000 scale, printed on an Anycubic Photon SLA printer, which makes printing, removal from support and painting a little more difficult.
