A crimson sun bled across the alien landscape, casting long shadows from the twisted rock formations. Lieutenant Tamara Hansen gripped the control console of her Shift, sweat slicking her palms despite the air conditioning struggling against the searing heat. This wasn't the idyllic research mission they'd been promised. Intel suggested a hidden base of the reptilian Yibbinians, a race notorious for their slave trade.
Tamara glanced at her co-pilot, Ensign Kern, a fresh-faced kid barely out of training. His face was pale, a stark contrast to his jet-black hair. "Easy there, Kern," she said, her voice calm despite the rising tension in the cockpit. "Remember, we're just scouts."
Their Shift, a customized variant dubbed "Firefly" for its experimental laser cannons, was a marvel of Terran engineering. Unlike the standard six-man crews, Firefly was stripped down for speed and firepower, boasting a mere three occupants. Tamara, a veteran pilot with nerves of steel, manned the controls. Kern handled navigation, his youthful enthusiasm a welcome counterpoint to her stoicism. In the rear, Sergeant Petrov, a gruff but reliable soldier, monitored their rear scanners and readied the heavy pulse rifles.
The rocky terrain stretched before them, a desolate wasteland dotted with the occasional gnarled tree, its leaves shimmering a sickly purple in the alien light. The recon drone they'd launched earlier sputtered and died, its signal abruptly cut off. A knot of unease tightened in Tamara's gut.
"Kern, anything on the scanners?" she asked, her voice clipped.
"Picking up faint energy signatures, Lieutenant," Kern replied, his brow furrowed. "Multiple readings, several klicks ahead."
Tamara's heart hammered against her ribs. Multiple readings meant they weren't alone. With a flick of a switch, she activated Firefly's cloaking device. The once-gleaming metal hull shimmered, turning translucent, blending seamlessly with the alien sky.
They skimmed the ground, the repulsor engines whining softly. The energy signatures grew stronger, resolving into a cluster of squat, obsidian buildings. Smoke plumed from a central chimney, staining the already polluted air. This was definitely a Yibbini base.
"Tamara," Kern hissed, his voice tight with fear. "Visual on the ground. Multiple Yibbinians… and they're loading… cages?"
Disgust curdled in Tamara's stomach. The Yibbinians' cruelty was legendary. She gritted her teeth. "Hold position, Kern. We need to report this back to the Crest II."
But before she could initiate communication, the ground trembled. A monstrous, bipedal creature emerged from the shadows of the central building. Its reptilian body was covered in thick, obsidian scales that glinted in the dying sunlight. Its four-fingered hands grasped massive cages filled with whimpering human figures.
Tamara's blood ran cold. They were too late. These people were already slaves. But giving up wasn't an option. Not with innocent lives at stake.
"Firefly, decloak!" she roared, slamming her fist down on the activation button. The cloaking shimmer vanished, revealing their sleek metal form to the Yibbinians.
A cacophony of screeches erupted from the reptilian creatures as they turned towards the Shift. Tamara slammed the throttle forward, the Shift surging ahead, laser cannons blazing. The first blasts ripped through the cages, melting the metal bars and showering the ground with sparks. The Yibbinians roared in fury, their slavering jaws snapping at the empty air.
This was no recon mission anymore. This was a fight. A fight for freedom, a fight for humanity. Tamara weaved the Shift through the Yibbinians, her piloting skills honed by years of experience. Petrov unleashed a hail of pulse fire, dropping several of the reptilian slavers.
But the Yibbinians were relentless, their sheer numbers a formidable foe. One managed to latch onto the Shift's wing with a screech, its claws tearing through the metal. The craft shuddered violently, sending Tamara scrambling to regain control.
"We're losing altitude!" Kern shouted over the comms.
Tamara gritted her teeth. They were sitting ducks. But then, a blinding flash illuminated the sky. The Crest II, alerted by their sudden decloaking, had arrived. Thermo cannons boomed, obliterating the Yibbinians with a satisfying finality.
With a final heave, Tamara managed to wrestle the Shift back to level flight, the damaged wing groaning in protest. They limped back towards the Terranian flagship, the freed humans cheering from the rocky ground below.
Later, on the sterile deck of the Crest II, Tamara received a commendation for bravery. But the cheers and medals felt hollow. The Yibbinians were still out there, and the fight for freedom in the Andromeda Galaxy was far from over.
Being a fan of the German Science Fiction series Perry Rhodan since the early 1980s, I wanted to build a model of them multi purpose, all terrain vehicle called "Flugpanzer Shift" for quite a long time. Although there are countless different versions of this vehicle, I preferred the first variant which was published in the late 1960s. I first build a small basic prototype to see, if the typical round cabin could be build. To build the final model, I took a Revell Leopard II tank chassis and placed a complete new cabin made out of plastic and paper on it.
The flying tank Shift is the general multi-purpose, all terrain vehicle in the Perry Rhodan-universe. It can be used for research on foreign planets, but it's also an important factor in the Terranian Space Forces, since the armed version is often used for combat missions. It is able to drive, swim, dive, fly in a planetary atmosphere and also usable for short space flights.
There are many different variants of the Shift, most of them are about 10 meters long, 4 meters width (without wings) and 4 meters height. It has a standard crew of 6 and its tops speed is about 500 kph flying and 150 kph on the ground.
Most Shifts are equipped with a 15 meter Periscope (mounted behind the dome), their fixed wings are used to stabilize the vehicle on flights in planetary atmospheres.
A miniature fission reactor installed behind the pilots dome is the power source for all systems and engines on board of the Shift.
The model shows a small attack Shift stationed on the Terranian Flagship Crest II , a Super battleship of the Imperium-Class, during the beginning of the Andromeda Campaign. Unlike the normal Shift it only has a crew of three but has a increased offensive and defensive potential.
The chasis of the Shift was made from a Revell 1/72 Leopard II. The wings are made from plastic sheets, the fuselage is made from a pastic frame covered with paper. The engines at the back are made from a straw, all other details were taken from the spare part box. The transparent dome was formed using a transparent pastic sheet and a hot bulb.
