The USS Boston was a Baltimore-class heavy cruiser that served the United States Navy with distinction. Launched in 1942, she saw extensive action during World War II, participating in numerous campaigns in the Pacific Theater. From the Marshall Islands to Okinawa, the Boston played a crucial role in supporting naval operations.
In a groundbreaking development, the Boston was converted into a guided missile cruiser in the early 1950s, becoming the lead ship of her class. Equipped with the Terrier missile system, she operated primarily in the Mediterranean, participating in NATO exercises and responding to crises like the Lebanon crisis.
With the escalation of the Vietnam War, the Boston returned to combat, providing naval gunfire support to ground troops. Despite being reclassified as a heavy cruiser, she retained her missile capabilities. However, the rapid advancement of technology rendered the Terrier system obsolete.
Unfortunately, the Boston was involved in a friendly fire incident in 1968, where she was mistakenly targeted by US Air Force aircraft. While the ship suffered minor damage, the incident highlighted the challenges of coordinating forces in complex combat situations.
Despite plans to modernize the Boston, budget cuts led to her decommissioning in 1970. Efforts to preserve her as a museum ship were unsuccessful, and she was ultimately scrapped in 1976. The USS Boston, a versatile and enduring warship, left a significant mark on naval history.
USS Boston, old Revell kit (as part of the missile fleet box) in 1/483.
Build OOB, but had to replace 2 AA guns as they were missing. Painted with Revell Aqua Color and added a bit Tamyia rust to it.
