The Emden was a German small cruiser famous in World War I. It was part of the East Asian Squadron stationed overseas. The Emden was successful in destroying or capturing 23 ships in the Indian Ocean. It also shelled the harbor and oil tanks at Madras and destroyed other allied ships. The Emden was eventually surprised and destroyed by the Australian cruiser Sydney.
