To replace its aging World War I minesweepers, the German Kriegsmarine developed the M35 class in the mid-1930s. These vessels were highly maneuverable, seaworthy, and heavily armed, earning them the nickname "Channel Destroyers" from the British. Despite their impressive capabilities, several factors hindered mass production. Complex construction and high costs led to the development of a simpler design, while engine maintenance issues and oil shortages further hampered output.
A total of 69 M35s were built, with 34 lost during the war. Post-war, these ships were divided among the US, UK, and Soviet navies. Interestingly, five were returned to Germany in the 1950s and served in the Bundesmarine.
The ship of this model, M24, was commissioned in February 1941. Sunk after mine hit on 28.01.1944 it was raised, and taken over by Britain after the war. Given to France in 1947 as Ailette. Bought by German Bundesmarine in 1957 as Wespe . Sunk as a target ship in 1973 near Helgoland.
One of the classic 1/400 scale ship models by Heller which is a bit hard to get now. For their age, those kits are not too bad to build, however their scale is a bit unusual today.
